I was Broken
March 1st, 2010
I thought this weeks episode, ” The Lighthouse “, was by far one of the best. I didn’t care for Jack’s character in season five, it just wasn’t him. He’s a stand up, take charge kind of guy and seeing him all broken and submissive, well it just didn’t suit him. Now he’s more like his old self – he even looks like, shall we say, ready.
Jacob sent Hurley and Jack to the lighthouse and along the way Hurley asks Jack why he came back to the Island. Jack replied, “I came back because I was broken and I was stupid enough to think this place could fix me”. I think somewhere deep within his heart he knows the Island will fix him and he knows he has a job to do.
Once inside the lighthouse Hurley was instructed by Jacob to turn the wheel to the setting of 108 degrees, because someone is coming and they need help finding the Island. As Hurley is turning the wheel Jack starts seeing images in the mirrors. Jack grabs the chain from Hurley and turns the wheel to his name “Shepard” at #23 and see’s the image of the house he grew up in. Jack became so upset, because the memories were more than he could bear, that he smashed all the mirrors. That house represents the broken man Jack had become. You’ll remember that in a drunken stupor one evening, Jack’s father Christian advises the young Jack not to be a hero because he doesn’t have what it takes. That drunken statement is what caused Jack to have a compulsive obsession to fix things.
In the sideways world we found out Jack has a son named David, but we don’t know who his mother is. I noticed in David’s room when Jack is listening to the recorder there are pictures on the wall behind his head. The pictures are of two blonde women standing side by side, so maybe David’s mother is Sara or Juliet. I don’t believe Kate is a candidate because she’s too young to have a fifteen year old child. Didn’t you think the bunny rabbit that hid the spare house key was a reference to Juliet? Remember Juliet and Ben would use rabbits for medical experiments?
Meanwhile back at the lighthouse Jacob appears and tells Hurley that it doesn’t matter that Jack smashed the mirrors that who ever is coming to the island will figure out another way to find it. Hurley then understands Jacob wanted Jack to see those images. Don’t you just love Hurley and his innocence?
Jacob then tells Hurley it was the only way for Jack to see how important he is and that Jack is here because he has to do something and he can’t be told what that is. Jacob tells Hurley the real mission was to get him and Jack as far away from the temple as he possibly could, because someone bad is headed there and it’s too late to warn the one’s at the temple. We know he must mean Claire and her friend Smokey. According to Ilana, Smokey/Flocke is looking for recruits.
So what did you think of Claire? I believe Claire can be turned back to good once she knows where Aaron is or gets him back, but until then Kate better look out. As for everyone else at the temple, I think it’s certain Smokey is going to start killing those he can’t recruit.
Now lets go back to the wheel at the lighthouse, the name “Wallace” appeared next to 108 degrees. I don’t think anyone by the name of Wallace is coming. In Scottish Wallace means Welshman and Foreigner. Jacob said someone was coming. It might just mean a foreigner like Desmond – you know he’s Scottish or maybe it’s Widmore he’s from the United Kingdom. Both of these men could be considered foreigners. Maybe Widmore is coming to fight this war he told Locke of.
This week I’m going to leave you with a puzzle I came across and that’s “What the Island is.” It’s described as a four letter word. See the following clues:
- The first clue is “Shall we play hangman?”
- There are no A’s or E’s in the word.
- Wanna buy another vowel? Ok, but you only get one.
- Finally the island has to exist and someone must protect it. It’s important to the world outside.
Can ya dig it?
